Every fall, flu season arrives in New York City — and every year, thousands of Upper East Side residents end up sick, missing work, and passing the virus around to their families. Most of it is preventable. Here's what I tell my patients at Healarian Pharmacy when they ask how to prepare.

1. Get Your Flu Shot in September or October

Timing matters. The flu vaccine takes about two weeks to reach full effectiveness, and flu season in New York typically peaks between December and February. That means September or October is the sweet spot — early enough to be protected before the wave hits, not so early that the immunity fades by late winter.

That said, getting vaccinated later is still worthwhile. A December or January flu shot still provides real protection, especially for high-risk family members.

At Healarian Pharmacy: Walk in anytime Mon–Fri 10am–6pm or Saturday 9am–12pm. No appointment needed. Most insurance covers the flu shot at $0 — including Medicare Part B. Learn more about flu shots →

2. Know Who Needs the High-Dose Vaccine

Not all flu shots are the same. Adults 65 and older have weaker immune responses to standard vaccines, which is why the CDC specifically recommends the high-dose flu vaccine (Fluzone High-Dose or Fluad) for seniors. These formulations produce a significantly stronger immune response.

If you or someone in your family is 65+, ask specifically for the high-dose option. We carry it at Healarian Pharmacy — call ahead at 212-317-0828 to confirm availability before coming in.

3. Vaccinate Your Whole Household

One of the most effective things you can do is get everyone vaccinated — not just yourself. Children are some of the highest spreaders of influenza, and unvaccinated family members can bring the virus home even if you're protected.

Flu shots are approved for children 6 months and older. Infants under 6 months can't be vaccinated, which is exactly why everyone around them should be.

4. Stock Your Medicine Cabinet Before You Need It

When you're sick with the flu, you don't want to be running to the pharmacy. Stock up on these before flu season starts:

Ask me at the pharmacy counter if you have questions about what's appropriate for your specific situation, especially if you have high blood pressure or take regular medications — some OTC flu remedies interact with common prescriptions.

5. Know the Antiviral Window

If you do come down with flu symptoms — sudden fever, body aches, headache, extreme fatigue — there are antiviral medications like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) that can reduce the severity and duration of illness. But they only work if started within 48 hours of symptom onset.

That means if you wake up feeling like you've been hit by a truck, don't wait. Call your doctor that morning. Once your prescription is ready, bring it to us — we'll fill it same day.

Prescription tip: If you're already a Healarian patient, keep our number in your phone: 212-317-0828. We can coordinate same-day Tamiflu fills and work directly with your doctor's office.

6. Wash Your Hands. Actually Wash Them.

This sounds basic because it is — but it's genuinely one of the most effective flu-prevention measures we have. The flu virus survives on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours. A proper handwash is at least 20 seconds with soap, covering the backs of your hands, between fingers, and under your nails.

When soap isn't available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) is a reasonable substitute, though not as effective as soap and water for all pathogens.

The Bottom Line

Get vaccinated early. Get your family vaccinated. Stock your medicine cabinet. Know when to call your doctor. These four things, done consistently, will keep most households significantly safer through flu season in New York City.
